The smaller stories are much, much better. It has good reasoning for keeping the body mysterious, but it means you’re often stopping mid-quest to wonder why you’re bothering, and the answer is often ‘because it’s the only way to progress’. You’re meant to care about waking a body in your backyard, but Wytchwood doesn’t give you enough to be all that bothered. It’s not perfect in this area: the overriding objective is a faulty one. Wytchwood is an adventure game that takes crafting and turns it into its puzzles and quests. The world often reacts to your crafting and fetching in imaginative ways. And there’s a dark sense of humour running through it like rock. The deviants you are killing are hulking, grotesque versions of woodland animals, and they have fairy-tale-like stories to make them larger than life. This is a beautiful game, in much the same way that Knights & Bikes and Wild at Heart are beautiful, with 2D cutouts dancing on a semi-3D world. It stops the feelings of grind and repetition that you often get in MMOs or large-scale RPGs.īut the main way that Wytchwood files off its own edges is it’s overwhelming character. You can pop to the right region, do one action, and you are now fully stocked. The first is that you rarely need more than one of each item.
Wytchwood understands this, and does a couple of things to mitigate it. You would be perfectly justified to put down the pad when Wytchwood asks you for the same far-flung item that you have gained five times before (looking at you, ghost skull). It’s a yawning void of picking up items, trapping creatures and combining other items. Sometimes, and it’s not a rare occurrence, Wytchwood’s beautiful wrapping peels back and you see that it’s made of the same interactions, over and over again. The popular folklore-ish image of the witch has her brewing potions in a cauldron over fire.It’s the gaping chasm that Wytchwood tries to build a bridge over. Another shortcoming with Wytchwood is the fact that there is not much, if any, use of the cauldron or the hut. Essentially, players are sent out on fetch-quests where they have to gather resources, craft items and accomplish certain missions to progress in the story.Īs the story moves along, the recipes and requirements get ever more complicated and the grinding can become a tad tiresome. The distinctive storybook vibe of the artwork, coupled with a fairytale-like setting, has a note of comfort in it. In a year filled with grief and gloom, the world of Wytchwood brings a refreshing bucket load of warmth and joy with it. Players also have the option to toggle the graphical settings to suit their setup.
The indie game can easily be enjoyed on computers with lower-end hardware.

Some of the resources can be readily picked up off the floor. This, in turn, reveals a recipe for crafting the same. Inspecting creatures reveals their weaknesses - such as traps or potions - and how they can be collected. The dear old witch has the option to inspect objects around her. Wytchwood is dictated by lists of objects that are required for action. The difficulty in Wytchwood does not lie with enemies or threats of action - their attacks are mostly telegraphed and easily dodgeable. The crux of the game revolves around the notion of fetching and crafting. If one runs out of any ingredient, they can quickly teleport to a biome through the dimensional gate hub. Each biome also provides the players with crafting ingredients that they must gather.
Some are violent towards the protagonist and can be dealt with craftable items. Different biomes have different unique animals and creatures living in them.
